AAC Experience

Throughout the majority of my life, I have employed various electronic communication devices.
From my formative years, I have been captivated by the potential of technology to enhance communication capabilities.
In my professional role, I had the opportunity to deliver presentations across the United States as a representative of the DynaVox corporation.
This experience significantly refined my public speaking skills and expanded my comprehension of the underlying technologies.
My responsibilities encompassed demonstrating their devices at trade exhibitions as well as presenting academic papers and speeches at conventions and professional gatherings.

Since the age of eight, I have actively participated in discussions concerning augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) throughout the United States.
These dialogues ignited my interest in examining how technology can bridge communication barriers for individuals with speech impairments.
My travels encompassed several states, including Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, and Pennsylvania, among others.
Each state presented distinct opportunities for learning from diverse communities and organizations dedicated to AAC.
In Michigan, I had the privilege of collaborating with John Eulenberg at the Artificial Language Laboratory at Michigan State University, where I had a specialized device crafted for personal utilization.
The collaborative endeavor facilitated innovation in the development of solutions tailored to my particular communication requirements.
This device, referred to as The Tim Dooley System, was affixed to the rear of my wheelchair.
This configuration proved revolutionary for me, as it fostered greater independence and interaction with those in my vicinity.
Access to the device was enabled through a 64-position detente joystick attached to my pummel.
Although it may appear modest by contemporary standards, it served as an essential tool that facilitated communication.
The LED display was restricted to 24 characters, in contrast to the expansive screens currently available.
This technology was pivotal in conveying my narrative and insights to others, enriching both my experiences and those of my audience.
I employed this device for presentations in Michigan and at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

At present, I address college students studying speech therapy and disabilities.
In these sessions, I share my personal experiences with technology and disability, underscoring the significance of accessibility.
Feedback from participants indicates that my presentations are enlightening, inspiring, and provide substantial insights into understanding individuals with disabilities within society.
I endeavor to cultivate an inclusive environment where students can engage meaningfully with the material.
Subsequent to my sessions, attendees frequently express a transformed perspective on individuals with disabilities.
This shift often leads to enhanced advocacy and awareness in their prospective professional practices.
I welcome the opportunity to present to your group in the Kingston, Albany, and New York City regions.
Connecting with diverse audiences invigorates my commitment to advocacy and knowledge dissemination.
