About Me
My name is Tim Dooley, and I have a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. I currently reside independently in an apartment in upstate New York.
Throughout my life, I have utilized computers and augmentative communication devices, including DynaVox systems and a custom-built device. Presently, I rely on an iPad equipped with a communication application known as TouchChat. In my assessment, the iPad offers greater ease of use and flexibility compared to traditional speaking devices. Although the specialized devices served their purpose well in their time, I believe the advancements in technology have significantly improved accessibility. I also had the privilege of serving as a spokesperson for AAC initiatives, traveling extensively across the country.
My professional journey included a position with DynaVox, a leading manufacturer of speech-generating devices, where I served as a speaker. It was at the company’s headquarters that I met my girlfriend, who was also a representative. Our initial meeting sparked an instant connection, leading to a long-distance relationship that spanned over five years, during which we frequently traveled to see each other and utilized Skype for communication. Our story has been featured in various newspapers. Fast forward a few years, and we are still together.
My tenure with DynaVox allowed me to indulge my passion for travel, which I consider a significant hobby. I have had the pleasure of going on a Caribbean cruise and experiencing the pristine beaches of the region. Additionally, I have traveled extensively from Maine to Florida and California, as well as enjoying exciting poker tournaments in Las Vegas.
With over 20 years of experience using speaking computers, I have developed a comprehensive understanding of both computer technology and computerized augmentative and alternative communication devices. This journey has ignited my interest in web design, leading me to pursue formal education in the field and obtain certification as a web designer.
In addition to my work in web design, I serve as a keynote speaker on augmented and assistive communication devices. My presentations aim to demonstrate that individuals with disabilities and those who are non-speaking can communicate effectively and pursue and achieve any goals they have set for themselves.
